Traditional Cuban Clothes

Typical Cuban clothes consist of looser style of clothing, where cotton and linen are more prevalent (more breathable and suitable for the harsh humid and hot environments of the tropical island).  Some traditional clothing includes suits, as well as dresses or skirts that are embroidered and contain colorful designs, which are used for dancing or parades.  Although these were also used in the famous caberets and casinos that existed in the island before the revolution.  Rumberos and rumberas would wear these costumes and do extravagant shows in these places.

The guayabera shirt came into existence early on.  It consists of a long shirt, with multiple pockets, typically made of cotton or linen.  The design contains slits, and embroidered design.  The shirts are used for both formal (weddings, special occasions) and informal occasions (parties or leisure).  Now the most prevalent shirt worn in the island, the Cuban guayabera is known world wide, and everyone from young kids to older gentleman and grandfathers wear this traditional shirt.

The simple design allows for movement around the island, under all kinds of conditions and temperatures (whether it is raining, or it is a hot summer day).  Typically worn with a straw hat, it provides protection from the sun and comfortable breathable clothing to stay cool.  The pockets provide a means to store things, such as Cuban cigars or guava pieces to bring back to the home for eating a delicious snack.

These shirts are truly amazing, and are sure to be used for generations to come.
